While stress is evident in any job, teachers seem to face increased levels of stress due to their unique circumstances. 2. Learn to say no. This can be quite difficult...especially as a new teacher. New teachers think they must say "yes" to everything in order to keep their job, but this can quickly lead to teacher burnout.

3. Join teacher discussion boards/forums. There are many teacher forums on the internet where teachers can not only vent their frustrations, but get real advice from real teachers who have experienced the same problems.

4. Think positive. In fact, don't just think positive thoughts, but actually say them out loud. In the morning, or on your way to work, say positive things about your job, about your students, about your colleagues. You'll be amazed at the impact that saying these things out loud can have on the rest of your day.

5. Cool down and take breaks. Teachers have a tendency to go straight through the day (and night) without taking a break. This is unhealthy and only adds to your stress level. Make sure to NOT work through lunch. Take that time to eat a healthy meal and talk to colleagues about things other than school. In other words let yourself take a mental break from the job during the day. Also, at the end of the school day, make a to-do list for the next day and then take ten minutes to relax and cool down with some other stress relieving techniques such as deep breathing exercises, stretching, or visualization.

There many things in life that you may find cause you stress, however this does not have to be the case. The only reason they are causing you stress is because you are allowing them too.

This is sometimes hard to accept for many as it is so much easier to blame someone else for the stresses in your life. If you choose to take accountability for your stress then you may become negative about yourself. Doing either of these things may make your life even more stressful, and the next thing you know you are in a spiral of stress, fatigue, and self-doubt.

Accepting things that come your way will reduce resistance to positive thoughts. It is easy to read but how easy is it to do? Below are some tips to help you on the road to acceptance and to a life of blissful fulfillment.

1. Realize that in some way whatever you have to accept was attracted into your world so that you could learn from it

2. Appreciate the stress, for the stress is telling you that you are out of alignment of where you want to be.

3. Stop and write. Write down everything that is good about the stress, the areas that are good in your life, and the things you appreciate.

4. Remember that the stress you are experiencing now will more then likely not matter in a week, let alone a day.

5. Listen to a motivation CD or read an motivation book

6. Watch a funny movie or show. Laughter to this day is still the best relief.

7. Exercise, I know many will skip this, but I don't mean jog a marathon. Do anything, a walk, 20 sit-ups, anything to boost the endorphins

8. Try aromatherapy, there are many scents that calm the mind and body

9. Learn self-hypnosis or meditation, both of these will help center and bring you back into balance

10. When all else fails, refocus your thoughts on anything else that brings you joy or take a power nap. Many times frustration and stress occur when one is tired and needs rest.

There are, of course, other ways to reduce stress and bring you back into alignment and you need to do what works for you. However, by not accepting the stress as self-induced and recognizing that your thoughts are causing it may prove to be quite detrimental to your life experience.

Stress, burnout and physical exhaustion have become a way of life for many people. You need to feel that you can get a handle on what stresses you, and diffuse this stress in different ways so as to maintain both your physical and emotional health.

  1. Be organized. You can plan all you want, but if you cannot find the project, list or information you were to work with, it is pretty stressful.

  3. Allow for interruptions and changes. If you schedule yourself so tight that you can't be interrupted for the 15 minutes you spent talking to an unexpected caller, you may find yourself highly stressed. Chill out and realize that there will be some interruptions and you can handle that.
  4. Have realistic expectations of yourself and others. No one is superman. You cannot get three days work done in one day. Don't wait till the last minute and put so much stress on yourself with huge amounts of work.

To calm yourself physically and move back into a state of calm readiness, simply become conscious of your breathing, take control of it, deepen it and slow it down.

The parts of the brain that control breathing usually function by themselves. By taking conscious control, we reestablish our command over our physical reactions and shift our mental and physical state.

Emotional reactions to stress can be the most distressing. Often, too, our stress is interpersonal (to do with other people), and becoming emotionally upset can make the situation worse.

Emotional stress reactions include anger or irritability, anxiety or dread, and depression or helplessness.

Building on the simple stress management technique for the physical reaction, slow and deepen your breathing as you become aware of how your emotion feels in your body. As you notice your body's reaction, name your emotion and acknowledge it. As you do so, your emotional reaction starts to recede.

A Simple Technique for Managing Your Mental Stress Reaction

Physical stress reactions arise from emotions, and emotions arise from thoughts. Having calmed your body and emotions down, you can take a moment to notice the thoughts that led up to it. Keep a record and discover what thoughts typically send you into a stress response. These are what is called "automatic thoughts" because they turn up by themselves, probably having been put in your head during your childhood by someone well-meaning or otherwise.

When you have a good idea of what your automatic thoughts are, you can start to modify them.

Write down logical, adult, non-blaming counter-thoughts for each of your automatic thoughts.

Set aside a few minutes and calm yourself down by slow, easy breathing, thinking of a pleasant, relaxing place.

In a calm and reflective state, first say the automatic thought as if quoting it to someone, then follow it with the new thought. Repeat this a few times, allowing the conviction to leak out of the automatic thought and flow into the replacement thought.

Repeat this exercise until the automatic thought is dealt with.

These simple stress management techniques can help to shift your thoughts, feelings and physical reactions in the direction of the calm competence which is your best state for handling life's challenges.
